What's the difference between your TS-xxx, TVS-xxx and VS-xxx product lines?

TS and TVS are for our NAS product line. These devices are for people that want to have a centralized storage to backup and share data. All of the TS and TVS NAS devices come with the same OS so you could use the business ready feature along with any media features too. Our NAS can also run Surveillance Station and QVR pro, which let you use your NAS as an NVR to record and live view IP cameras.

For more information on our NAS product line please refer to this link https://www.qnap.com/products/

VS stands for Viostor, and this is our NVR product line. It is being phased out since QVR Pro running on a NAS has more advanced features. If you already have VioStore products, you can integrate them into QVR center so that you can have access to some of the QVR Pro features and your QVR pro client app can view your cameras from your VioStore products.

For more information on our NVR please visit this link http://www.qnapsecurity.com/

We support USB 3.1, USB 3.0 and USB2.0 on the front and back of most units. These ports are used for external hard drives, UPS, wifi dongle, USB camera, USB mouse, USB keyboard, and USB Speaker. We also have a few units that support USB quick access to connect to a PC or mac through USB. But only if the NAS has USB quick access.

In addition you can schedule backups to the external drive, so that you can have a hard copy of your data always with you.

Please refer to this link for compatibility https://www.qnap.com/compatibility/

The noise level depends on each unit, but generally most units are fairly quiet. The loudest part being the drives, so if you want a very quiet NAS, you can consider using SSDs. All NAS come with a smart fan application so you can control when the fan turns on, for example, you can control at what temperature a fan turns on.

DB levels are located on our website for each product under hardware section.

Not unless the NAS has USB quick access. If the NAS does have USB quick access, the speed is single GbE since that is the speed of IP over USB and our NAS connect to a PC through IP.

Yes. The ES1640dc v2 comes with 2 controllers.
For more information, please go to https://www.qnap.com/go/product/es1640dc%20v2

For the most up to date units please check our website at www.qnap.com. All units that are listed are available on the market. All units under archive are no longer available on the market, but firmware updates will be supported for most of the units.

The energy consumption of our NAS depends on the unit. You can usually find an estimated power usage for each nas under, specifications. A typical 8 bay nas might take around 70 watts.

Our NAS devices have some of the highest performance in the NAS market. The Read and Write speed depends on the CPU of the NAS, the connection that NAS has (GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE, 40G, Thunderbolt, etc) and the drives used (HDD, SATA SSD, NVMe, etc).

With dual 10GbE and an Intel i series CPU or comparable AMD, you might get around 1000-2000MB/s depending on drives, model and what devices are connected to the NAS.

We have our own software, based off of Linux, which we update regularly.

To run QVR pro, 4GB RAM minimum is required. With QVR pro free version, you get 8 free licences. You can purchase QVR gold for up to 16 licences and purchase more licenses after that. But how many cameras we would recommend on 1 NAS depends on the storage and throughput of the NAS, the resolution and framerate of the IP cameras, and how long you want to hold recordings for. For a large number of cameras, more than 4GB of RAM may be required.

We have a NAS selector that calculates storage and throughput needs based on number of cameras, framerate, resolution, video format, and number of days to store recordings. https://www.qnap.com/go/qvr-nas-selector

QNAP offers a great combination of powerful easy to use free software, and excellent hardware. We offer powerful features such as Snapshots, backup and replication software to backup your devices to the NAS and replicate the NAS to other NAS or public clouds. The NAS can host websites, run as a media server, run Virtual machines on our Hypervisor as well as run hundreds of apps and containers for a large variety of cloud services that you control. We are also compatible with VMware, vSphere, Hyper-V, and Citrix.

Where other providers charge a premium for 10GbE, we built it into most NAS that we currently sell. We also have 25GbE, and 40GbE, as well as Thunderbolt direct connection options.

We offer powerful CPUs from Intel i Series, Xeon, or AMD Ryzen to allow for high performance, even when many people access the NAS at once. Even our SMB NAS have up to 4 PCIe slots for adding Network cards, SAS cards, or QM2 cards for adding up to 4 NVMe SSDs per card. We can further increase the speed of SSDs with SSD over provisioning.

Anyone who owns a QNAP has access to 12 hours a day 5 days a week free tech support and we have reasonably priced next business day onsite support options.

What kind of RAID is use for the NAS?
Our RAID is software RAID, and hardware RAID is not supported. Our software RAID uses the Marvell SATA controller and Intel CPU to give our NAS devices fast performance levels. Our performance matches or beats the performance levels commonly found through hardware RAID.

Our NAS can take SAS, Thunderbolt, and USB expansion units to increase the capacity of the NAS. You can see what expansion units each NAS can support here. https://www.qnap.com/go/compatibility-expansion

There is a RAID capacity expansion feature that allows you to remove your HDD one by one and replace the smaller capacity to a larger capacity. Please refer to this link for more information https://www.qnap.com/go/solution/raid-management/

We also have a system migration feature that allows you take out your hard drives and move to another unit with same number of bays or more. For system migration the order that you place your drives will not affect your data. For more information on system migration please refer to this link : https://www.qnap.com/go/solution/raid-management/

Our NAS devices also come with USB ports for you to backup your data too. Please refer to this link for compatible external storage devices https://www.qnap.com/go/compatibility/?device_category=external%20storage%20device

We also support VJBOD which allows one NAS to map it’s storage on another NAS, to increase the other NAS’s capacity. https://www.qnap.com/go/solution/vjbod/

Yes, the QNAP NAS can be easily used as a full fledge media server to stream music or videos. This can either be done directly with the QNAP Video Station and the QNAP Photo Station or a QNAP can act as a Plex, DLNA, Roon, iTunes server and more.

In addition a link can be create by the NAS so that you can share a specific folder or photo with your family or friends. This link can be shared on to your social media sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and etc.

Please refer to this link for more information on media capabilities https://www.qnap.com/go/solution/home-multimedia/

A software maximum is 4096 but how many you can actually do depends on the specifications of the NAS and on how heavy each individual is using the NAS. On a high end NAS, hundreds, and sometimes thousands in the case of light use can be possible.

All of our NAS support volume-based 256-bit AES encryption for data breach protection. How much this affects performance, varies depending on the NAS. In general, performance will not be hindered as much on NAS with a higher performance CPU.

Please refer to this link for more information:  https://www.qnap.com/go/solution/it-management/

Yes, you can SSH into the NAS and use command line. However we recommend using our GUI in most cases for a better user experience.
